Controlled Environment Agriculture / Indoor Agriculture
Controlled Environment Agriculture (CEA) is an indoor farming method that allows for crop production year-round. Cannabis and food growers are building or retrofitting CEA facilitates in response to increased demand for year-round production of these crops. As the market expands, these growers are looking for ways to improve operational efficiencies, save money, and increase their bottom line. However, they’re either weary of energy efficiency opportunities, not aware of compatible measures, or utility offerings do not align with their needs.
While CEA-compatible measures can be found in many energy efficiency programs—lighting, HVAC, and dehumidification—this customer segment is unique. Plant biology and horticulture inform the design of these sophisticated facilities—optimizing for plant yield, quality, and production efficiency. These facilities use nuanced technologies that require specialization to understand. Growers use elaborate combinations of equipment and mechanisms to control the plant production environment. For example, CO2 enrichment strategies are often critical to encourage photosynthesis but vary depending on humidity, lighting, and temperature.
With over 25 years of experience, Evergreen has developed an approach to CEA customers centered around assessing the market, listening to their needs, designing solutions, implementing them, and adapting as necessary. We are active members of DLC’s Horticulture XX and Resource Innovations Institute, with an internal Indoor Agriculture Best Practices Working Group that meets monthly to discuss innovative approaches and new technologies.
We have helped utilities across the country—DTE Energy, National Grid, Energy Trust of Oregon, Pacific Power, Rocky Mountain Power, Arizona Public Service, and Bonneville Power Administration—increase energy savings for these customers, from growers of cannabis to leafy greens. We blend our team’s expertise in customer outreach, plant biology, technology, and the CEA market to design and implement programs that meet everyone’s needs.
Heat Pumps
Heat pumps are a crucial component of today’s decarbonization strategy, and Evergreen has been working with heat pump manufacturers, vendors, contractors, and customers for over 25 years. Our approach focuses on the “Three A Strategy” of Awareness, Alignment, and Adoption. We establish networks of contractors to increase awareness of heat pump technology, providing comprehensive training to contractors, distributors, utility staff, and customers. We believe education on installation, benefits, and use-cases is key to heat pump success, whether it’s a gas, electric, or dual fuel heat pump.
We achieve alignment and adoption by understanding the unique needs of customers and contractors, providing consistent support, and engaging the market in a continuous feedback loop. Collaboration is another critical component of our strategy, and we work closely with a Technical Heat Pump Advisory Working Group, comprised of 26 manufacturers, regional energy efficiency organizations, subject matter experts, and government agencies. This group meets quarterly to share insights on the heat pump market. Additionally, our in-house HVAC Best Practices Group meets monthly to discuss lessons learned, new technologies, and innovative approaches from our programs across the United States.

Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption is booming, with more and more residential, commercial, and fleet customers switching to EVs. Utilities play a key role in supporting the growth of this market by integrating EVs with the electric grid, providing infrastructure, and educating customers. Developed in collaboration with the Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, Lighting Design Lab, and Lighting Research Center, NXT Level is the solution to the growing demand for knowledgeable trade allies in the energy workforce. By providing workers with the skills to design, sell, and install advanced commercial and industrial lighting retrofits, NXT Level empowers trade allies to become critical advocates for energy savings.
